5 Misconceptions and the Truth Behind BOTOX® Cosmetic

Posted July 24, 2018 in BOTOX® Cosmetic

For years, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the go-to treatment for unwanted lines and wrinkles in the upper face. This nonsurgical injection lessens the appearance of facial aging on the forehead, brow, or eye area, and restores a rested youthfulness to your complexion. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most widely known noninvasive injectable on the market today, there are still many misconceptions about it and its usages.

1. You Won’t Be Able to Express Yourself

The inability to express yourself is easily one of the most common misconceptions about BOTOX® Cosmetic. Many patients who have yet to undergo BOTOX® Cosmetic are hesitant because they are afraid that BOTOX® Cosmetic will make them look like a statue: unmovable, frozen, and fake. They are used to seeing horror-story pictures and parodies that use BOTOX® Cosmetic as the butt of the joke, and because of this, they cannot decipher what is normal and what is a worst-case scenario.

It is true that BOTOX® Cosmetic works by temporarily paralyzing muscles in the face so that facial wrinkles smooth out, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to move your face or that you won’t still look like yourself. BOTOX® Cosmetic is designed to provide subtle enhancements to your face, not the outrageous ones seen on television. It is always recommended, however, that you find a trusted and board-certified plastic surgeon to administer or supervise your BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure, as this will significantly increase the quality of your results.

2. BOTOX® Cosmetic Is a Poison

Many unknowing people believe that BOTOX® Cosmetic is dangerous and toxic. This is also not true. This misconception probably started because BOTOX® Cosmetic is derived from a protein found in botulinum toxin, a substance commonly linked to botulism and food poisoning. Many people jump to conclusions and assume that because this material can be dangerous in large amounts, it is also dangerous in small quantities. BOTOX® Cosmetic uses such a small and diluted amount of this toxin that it is not generally harmful to you. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved and has been for several years, even having undergone rigorous tests. As with all medications, some side effects can occur and even more rare serious side effects may occur. Please discuss this with your injector so that they may address any concerns before the treatment.

3. It’s Just for Wrinkles

Although treating facial wrinkles is the most common usage of BOTOX® Cosmetic, BOTOX® treats many different medical conditions, such as chronic migraines, excess underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), eye squints, and limb spasticity, to name a few. Because of its unique properties, BOTOX® is being tested and used to improve many areas of people’s lives and well-being.

4. You Can Inject BOTOX® Cosmetic Anywhere

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first non-invasive injectable suggested for treating movement-related upper face wrinkling. That said, it will not and cannot treat every wrinkle on your face. BOTOX® Cosmetic addresses wrinkles that have formed from constant movement. BOTOX® Cosmetic will be ineffective on static wrinkles that have developed from years of sun exposure.

5. Results Are Immediate and Permanent

Although there is no delayed recovery period for BOTOX® Cosmetic, results tend to take three to five days to become apparent and are often not fully visible until 10 to 14 days after treatment. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are known to last between three and six months, depending on the patient, and they can be repeated as often as desired.
