Woman getting microneedling done

Nearly everyone has at least one aspect of their skin they’d like to improve. Whether it’s smoothing fine lines, fading acne scars, or bringing a more youthful glow back to your complexion, finding the right treatment can be challenging. That’s why microneedling is quickly becoming one of the most popular treatments for people looking for a nonsurgical way to refresh their skin. However, your microneedling results don’t solely depend on the treatment itself. How you prepare beforehand and how you care for your skin afterward make a big difference in both the short- and long-term success of your microneedling treatment. In this blog, we’ll review some of the do’s and don’ts of caring for your skin before and after your microneedling procedure to help ensure your skin heals beautifully, giving you the results you’re looking for.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling is an incredibly versatile way to perk up your skin, addressing a wide array of issues stemming from an equally wide array of causes. By using a tool equipped with several tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production, which helps your skin repair and renew itself. The benefits of microneedling include:

  • Smoothing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Shrinking enlarged pores
  • Lessening the visibility of acne and other scars
  • Evening out your skin’s tone and texture
  • Improving mild skin laxity
  • Repairing sun damage and age spots

Many people turn to microneedling because it can address multiple skin concerns in a single treatment and enhance overall skin quality. It is often combined with additional therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosomes, to provide enhanced results.

How Does Microneedling Work?

The basic principle behind microneedling is simple: tiny needles create micro-channels in your skin that cause your body to think your skin has been injured so that it activates your natural healing response. This, in turn, boosts collagen and elastin production, which are key proteins in your body that help repair your skin and are also responsible for a firm, smooth, more youthful-looking complexion. At Aspire Medispa, we use the following microneedling devices:

Eclipse MicroPen® Elite

The Eclipse MicroPen® Elite is an advanced, medical-grade microneedling device with an adjustable needle depth that allows for precise and consistent needle penetration. The adjustable depth of the needles makes it ideal for addressing both superficial and deeper complexion concerns. With the Eclipse MicroPen® Elite, you experience minimal discomfort and enjoy a noticeable improvement in your skin’s texture after just a few sessions.

Matrix Pro® Microneedling

Matrix Pro® is another innovative device, this one combining microneedling with radiofrequency energy. It uses a technology called Depth Intelligence™ to simultaneously penetrate to three different depths of your skin and deliver varying levels of RF energy to each area according to your needs. This allows for more customized results, giving your skin a smooth, refreshed appearance.

When you come in for your microneedling treatment at Aspire Medispa, we will work with you to determine which microneedling device will offer you optimal results.

Do’s and Don’ts of Preparing for Your Microneedling Treatment

Getting the best results from your microneedling treatment starts before your session. Proper preparation leading up to your procedure minimizes skin irritation and maximizes effectiveness. The most important thing you can do to ensure the best possible results is to follow your provider’s before and after treatment guidelines closely to reduce the risk of complications.

Do:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds for at least one week before your microneedling treatment.
  • Stay hydrated and keep your skin well moisturized leading up to your session.
  • Let your provider know in advance about any active acne, cold sores, or skin infections.
  • Discontinue retinoids, harsh exfoliants (both chemical and physical), and products containing AHAs or BHAs (alpha or beta hydroxy acids) a few days before your treatment.

Don’t:

  • Show up with makeup, serums, or moisturizers on the day of your appointment—clean skin is essential.
  • Get BOTOX® Cosmetic, injectable fillers, or chemical peels in the days immediately before microneedling.
  • Use self-tanner, as it can irritate your skin and increase sensitivity.
  • Take blood-thinning medications or supplements (like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil) unless approved by your doctor, as these can increase bruising.

By taking the above steps to prepare for microneedling, you’ll set the stage for a smoother, more comfortable treatment and healing process.

Do’s and Don’ts of Caring for Your Skin After Your Microneedling Treatment

Post-treatment care is equally important. Your skin will be more sensitive after microneedling, and how you treat it will directly affect your recovery and results. Again, be sure to carefully follow your provider’s post-treatment instructions to ensure safe healing and gorgeous outcomes.

Do:

  • Use a gentle cleanser and hydrating serum or moisturizer as directed.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day (and don’t forget to reapply), as your skin will be more vulnerable to sun damage.
  • Keep your skin clean and avoid touching it unnecessarily to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Stay well-hydrated and eat healthy, nourishing foods to encourage healing.
  • Expect mild redness and sensitivity for a couple of days, as they are a normal and expected part of the healing process.

Don’t:

  • Apply makeup for at least 24–48 hours after your treatment.
  • Use harsh exfoliants, retinoids, or active acids until your provider clears you.
  • Go to the gym, sauna, or swimming pool for the first 24 hours, as sweat and heat can irritate your freshly treated skin.
  • Pick, scratch, or rub at your skin while it heals, even if it feels dry or flaky, as this could cause scarring.
  • Forget to apply sunscreen, as UV exposure can undo the benefits of your treatment and increase the risk of developing hyperpigmentation.

By following microneedling aftercare guidelines, you can do your part to ensure that your skin heals properly, collagen production kicks into high gear, and your results last longer.
