How Can I Reduce Bruising and Swelling After a Nonsurgical Treatment?

Posted May 15, 2020 in BOTOX® Cosmetic, Injectables

2 Minute Read:

One of the main advantages of nonsurgical treatments is that they do not require a lot of downtime for healing and recovery. Bruising and swelling, however, are common side effects of nonsurgical treatments like dermal fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, or microneedling.

Since minimal recovery time and getting back to the normal rhythm of life is essential for many patients, it is important to stay prepared with tips that help minimize unsightly coloring and swelling.

What Helps a Bruise or Swelling Heal Faster?

Staying Hydrated

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Water helps keep infections away and acts as a catalyst for your recovery. You may also want to avoid alcohol for 24 hours following your treatment—as this dehydrates the body.

Keeping Your Head Elevated

It is often wise to keep your head slightly elevated when resting/sleeping. By doing so, you allow proper blood flow while draining fluid from the treated areas, further reducing swelling and bruising. Prop your head up with an extra pillow for two to four days after treatment.

Applying Ice and Pressure to the Area

Ice and cold packs constrict blood vessels, slowing blood flow to the injection or microneedling sites. By restricting blood flow to an affected area, patients can minimize the appearance of swelling and prevent bruise progression.

When doing this, don’t place ice directly on the bruise. Instead, protect your skin by wrapping the ice in a washcloth or paper towel. Cold compress therapy can often be used for one to two days after treatment.

Avoiding Exercising and Vigorous Activity

While you might be eager to return to the gym or other regular activities, you should limit your physical activity for at least two days. Avoiding exercise and strenuous activity will keep blood flow at a minimum, which can help the damaged blood vessels and capillaries recover faster.

It is also recommended that patients avoid sun exposure, saunas, steam rooms, and other spa treatments that can put an unnecessary strain on healing tissues. Use this time to focus on resting and recovery.
