Is BOTOX® Cosmetic a Dermal Filler?

When many men and women hear about injectable fillers, a good number of them think of BOTOX® Cosmetic and other treatments like JUVÉDERM®.
You could say that BOTOX® Cosmetic is by far the most well-known injectable filler. However, this statement has one problem: BOTOX® Cosmetic is NOT actually a filler.
While BOTOX® cosmetic and dermal fillers are both injectables, they work in entirely different ways and contain different ingredients.
BOTOX® Cosmetic treats dynamic facial lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements (blinking, squinting, smiling, frowning, etc.). These lines include forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet, to name a few.
Static wrinkles result from a loss of tissue elasticity and can be treated with dermal fillers.
How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neuromodulator that, when injected into specific facial muscles, blocks nerve impulses, thus weakening or prohibiting muscle contractions. This nerve blocker relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic facial lines and wrinkles around the brow, forehead, eyes, and between the eyebrows.
BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts about four to six months.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Injectable fillers, more commonly known as dermal fillers, are used to address static wrinkles and create a smoother, fuller appearance in the cheeks, chin, lips, and nasolabial folds of the face (the parentheses that extend down the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). These treatments work by physically plumping the targeted areas and stimulating collagen production for tighter, smoother, and healthier-looking skin.
Some dermal fillers can also be used to make hands look younger.
Treatment with dermal fillers can last from a few months to almost two years, depending on the brand, and will need to be repeated at some point to maintain the desired effect.
What Can JUVÉDERM® Do?
JUVÉDERM® is a tried and true dermal filler that is injected under the skin to smooth out moderate to severe facial lines around the mouth, chin, and nose.
JUVÉDERM® lasts about 18 months, and re-treatment is recommended at 12 months to maintain ideal results.
